7 Fruits For Better Looking Facial Skin

 lemon
Nom Nom Advertisements have taught us to believe that creams and cleansers are the key to having glowing, healthy looking facial skin. And while this may be true, it is only half of the truth: inner health radiates outward, meaning that what we ingest as part of our daily diet is just as important of a factor for determining how great our skin looks. The following are some fruits to improve your facial health, so start adding them to the grocery list as your new form of beauty treatment:
1. Avocado
Yes, it is a fruit! Packed with monounsaturated fats, they help prevent dryness in the epidermal layer of the skin both in the form of creams and as a part of your salad or dip. As it contains Omega-9, it will also improve the general skin tone and texture of facial skin, fighting off redness and irritation. If you find that your skin (along with your nails and hair) is dry and dull, know that avocados also contain large amounts of biotin that will combat it. You’ll also gain long-term benefits from ingesting the fruit, as research has indicated that, along with other fruits and vegetables, consuming avocados increases your body’s ability to absorb key antioxidants and nutrients.
2. Papaya
Know to be the “vitamin fruit”, it contains high levels in Vitamin A, C, and E, making it an antioxidant powerhouse. This means that the skin will be helped in getting rid of toxins that clog and prevent the facial skin from radiating. Naturally abundant in alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), it’s nature’s own version of high-end skincare creams. Create a mini facial by peeling the fruit and rubbing or leaving the inner skin on the face to leave it moisturized and brightened. Because of its acidity, it can also be used to treat stains or dark spots on the skin.
bannana

 3. Banana
Unless you don’t like the taste of one, there’s no reason why you should include it in your diet; it requires no time to prepare either, making it the perfect and quick addition to your breakfast on the go. Composed of 75% water, you’ll stay hydrated while reaping the benefits of Vitamin C and B6, the two elements crucial for maintaing the elasticity of the face to prevent sagging or creases. You can also apply it on your face as a moisturizer by mashing a ripe banana with a spoon or fork. After 20 to 25 minutes, the banana mask is washed off with tepid water to reveal a transformed, soft face. If you want to extract as much benefit out of the fruit as possible, boil the peel for ten minutes and drink the cooled water (or even throwing the peel into a blender and drink it!), as banana peel extract has been discovered to be rich in serotonin by researchers in Taiwan.
4. Lemon
It should be in your shopping cart if you’re looking for better facial skin! Lemon not only brightens and lightens dark spots on the skin to improve uneven skin tones, but it can also be used as a light tonic water for oil skin. Additionally, there’s no need to fuss over scars and discoloration any more, as applying lemon juice to the area can help diminish those traces over time. If you struggle with acne, lemon will also aid in repairing your skin and preventing future breakouts. Lemon can very easily be added to your diet in the form of juice or lemon pulp, yet boiling the peel of the lemon (or shaving it into small pieces) will be just as (if not more) beneficial, as it will lower the levels of toxins in the blood vessels to purify skin cells.

 5. Orange
All of us know its richness in Vitamin C, but it’s also important to note that most of its nutrients are in the thick peel, so facials and shreddings of it in your salad are the best ideas of how to use it. The fruit’s antioxidants also serve as an effective and easy way of nourishing your skin so it can fight free radicals, which are highly charged oxygen molecules that cause wrinkling, skin damage and even cancer. Because your facial skin is the most delicate skin on your body, combining ingestion with skin treatments based with orange extract is a sure way that you can decrease the speed of your skin’s aging.
6. Strawberry
With Vitamin C to repair the skin and anti-inflammatory properties, strawberries are considered to be the tastiest of elixirs for youthful skin. They are also packed with AHAs, making it a good anti-acne treatment when applied to the face as a toner after grinding and extracting the juice and mixing it with rosewater. Ellagic acid, which it also contains, fights off the ultraviolet rays of the sun to prevent skin damage as well.
7. Cherry
Follow this rule: the brighter and redder the cherries the better! The redness of the fruit is a good indicator of how much nutrient it contains. Cherries are also high in antioxidants, making it a top fruit for fighting free radicals. If you haven’t guessed it by now, antioxidants does wonders for the skin. Researchers from the Michigan State University suggest drinking a glass of red cherry juice daily to retard aging. If you want firm skin (don’t we all?), grind pitless cherries in a bowl and apply it directly on the face, leaving it on for at least 20 minutes. Its Vitamin C content also lowers skin damage so start popping them in your mouth!

Are doctors part of the healthcare problem?

Doctor
Dr Aniruddha Malpani, an IVF specialist and a vehement supporter of patient advocacy and information therapy tells us why doctors sometimes are a hindrance in our healthcare system.
I was part of a panel at the Health 2.0 conference in Bangalore recently. The theme was challenging – How do we deliver health care to a billion Indians? There were lots of interesting presentations, and while listening to these, it dawned on me that doctors like me are actually part of the problem.
Traditionally, we have always thought of doctors as being the solution. The knee-jerk reflex is – let’s open more medical colleges and create more doctors, so that more patients will get better health care. Isn’t a shortage of doctors the biggest problem we face in India today? Aren’t we very short of hospital beds? Without enough doctors, how can we even start to tackle this huge problem?
Actually, the medical profession is the reason we have such a dysfunctional illness care system. Remember that doctors only get paid to treat ill patients – and they spend years training and becoming experts in managing sickness. Most doctors would not even be able to recognize a healthy person, because they only see sick patients, day in and day out!
The medical hierarchy make things even worse. It’s the specialists – the ones who spend many years mastering the technical minutiae a particular organ (for example, heart surgeons or neurosurgeons) – who are at the top of the heap. They look at life through a very distorted prism, because they only see rare and complex problems. They know a lot about very little, but because they are the leaders – the KOLs or Key Opinion Leaders – they impose this distorted perspective on the entire profession. They give guest lectures at conferences; they publish articles in prestigious medical journals; and they are awarded with prizes, honours and medals.
Because they naturally want to increase their workload and importance, no expert is even going to say – What I do is not important. They have an inflated sense of their self-worth, which is why every cardiologist is going to say – we need to spend more money on preventing and treating heart disease; while every neurologist is going to say – we need to spend more money on preventing and treating brain illnesses. They don’t have any ability to look at the big picture, because they are so focused on individual problems.
Look at the way the medical profession has changed the definition of what normal blood pressure is; and what a normal blood sugar level is. It seems that we are all pre-diabetics, waiting to get a heart attack, unless we see our doctor and take statins and a cocktail of other medications!
Doctors can only see problems – they cannot see health! After all, psychiatrists study mental illness, and know very little about mental health and happiness. I think doctors are useful as technical specialists, but that’s all!
Take my personal example. I am an IVF specialist and am very good at what I do, but the only patients I see day in and day out are infertile couples who need IVF. I never see fertile couples, so it’s quite easy to see how my perspective can get distorted! I am not the best resource to manage infertility problems in the community, and even though I maybe an infertility expert, I need to have the humility to accept this. In fact, I may end up causing more harm to the public, by advising unnecessary fertility testing for all married couples! Not only does my daily work cause me to become biased, I am also likely to provide advise which increases my workload, since I am a rational homo enonomicus.
Retired doctors can be a useful source of advice. They have enough maturity to understand how unimportant doctors can be in delivering primary health care. They can help to design protocols, which trained caregivers and medical assistants can deliver in the community. They will do a much better job than doctors will, because they are embedded in the community; and enjoy what they do. However, doctors need to learn to respect them, so that the public will do so as well, rather than think of them as being second class poorly trained doctors.
While it may seem that working under the constraints we face in India (poverty, illiteracy and a shortage of healthcare workers) is a daunting task, it also means that there is a great scope for coming up with novel solutions! There is no question that this is a huge challenge, but it’s a great opportunity as well. However, we cannot afford to be naïve and expect that the solutions are going to come from doctors!

Are those expensive medical tests really required?

Medical Test
Doctors can order a wide variety of tests today and sadly many patients naively that the more expensive tests are better. After all, the fact that they cost more money means they must be more highly sophisticated, and will provide more information.
Unfortunately, this is a myth , which is driven partly because of the consumer driven society in which we live . Thus, if a bottle of ordinary wine costs Rs 500; and a vintage year costs Rs 5000, then it stands to reason that things which are more expensive are of greater value . This message has been drilled into our heads as a result of modern marketing and advertising, and doctors also do their best to persuade us that this is true . After all, isn’t the quality of the images provided by a more expensive 32 slice MRI scanner better than a 16-slice scanner? Isn’t it worth paying for quality, especially when it involves something so important as your health?
In reality, the opposite is true! Let me explain. Newly introduced medical tests tend to be expensive. This is because they are based on expensive R&D, and companies need to recoup their investment. Because it’s a new test, they have a first mover advantage, and can pretty much charge as much as the market will bear. They simply need to convince the doctor that the information they provide is useful and cost effective.
Since we live in a competitive capitalistic society, if the test is truly valuable, then a lot of other manufacturers will start offering less expensive alternatives to the test. This competition will cause the test to become more affordable and more easily available. However, if it is not a useful test, then no one else will bother to offer it, simple because it has limited utility in a limited market . As a result , only as few doctors will continue to order the test, and because the monopoly situation is likely to persist, the test will continue to remain expensive . However, remember that because something is expensive does not make it better.
In fact, in medicine, it’s the opposite which is true. Because the test remains expensive, few doctors will bother to order it. This means that the real-world clinical experience with this test is likely to be limited (for example, NK cell testing or ERA testing), because its value is unproven. Because it is ordered infrequently, doctors are never going to be able to get enough experience with it, because it will never become widely used.
On the hand, tests which have prove to be of clinical benefit become inexpensive because of competition. They provide useful information, and their utility increases over time, because they are ordered commonly, and as doctors accumulate more experience with the results, they understand the specificity and sensitivity of these tests better, so that they can use these test results to generate clinically actionable decisions.

Are you truly happy? Brain can tell

Happy

Mind that laugh! As the world celebrates International Day of Happiness Thursday, we can tell if people are truly happy just from their laugh.
A study has shown how the brain can detect fake laughter and respond differently to a genuine one.
A researcher from the Royal Holloway, University of London, has found that there were clear differences between how our brains respond to genuine and fake laughter.
A study led by Carolyn McGettigan, from the department of psychology, recorded the brain responses of participants as they listened to the same people produce genuine laughter, caused by watching funny YouTube videos and forced laughter.
The participants who were unaware that the study was about laughter perception, demonstrated different neurological responses when they heard false laughter.
This suggested that the brains not only distinguish between fake and genuine laughter, but attempt to work out why fake laughter is not genuine, reported Science Daily.
“As we celebrate International Day of Happiness today (Thursday), it’s fascinating to consider the way our brain is able to detect genuine happiness in other people,” said McGettigan.
“Our brains are very sensitive to the social and emotional significance of laughter.”
“During our study, when participants heard a laugh that was posed, they activated regions of the brain associated with mentalizing in an attempt to understand the other person’s emotional and mental state.
“Indeed, some of the participants engaged parts of the brain that control movements and detect sensation. These individuals were more accurate at telling which of the laughs were posed, and which were real. This suggests that as listeners, ‘trying out’ how a laugh would feel if we produced it ourselves might be a useful mechanism for understanding its meaning,” McGettigan said.
The International Day of Happiness was first observed by the UN General Assembly March 20, 2013 and acknowledged the importance of happiness in the lives of people around the world.

Meaningful activities can help children with Down’s Syndrome

Healthy
Keeping activities meaningful and enjoyable, and working on computers can help children with Down’s Syndrome cope up as far as learning parameters are concerned, experts said here Thursday.
Down Syndrome is associated with a delay in cognitive ability and physical growth and a particular set of physical characteristics, like slanted eyes and short necks. It is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21.
“Kids with Down Syndrome are slow learners and may get confused if they are taught too much at a time. Give them time to process language and respond,” said Surabhi Verma, director, Sparsh, an organisation working with disabled children.
She said that parents and teachers should use simple and familiar language, short and simple sentences and keep activities meaningful and enjoyable.
The tasks given to such children should be short, focused and clearly defined.
“Working on computers can sometimes sustain a child’s attention. Create an activity box for times when the child needs a change of activity or time out,” she said.
“Indoor games can be played with them. They should be made to understand the rules that could help learn the tricks,” she said.
March 21 is celebrated as the World Down Syndrome Day for raising awareness for people with this condition.
According to doctors, the disease often comes with congenital heart diseases, which is treatable with surgery.
About 40 to 50 percent of babies with Down Syndrome have heart defects. Early screening and surgical intervention if needed can greatly increase the life span and quality of life in such infants.
According to R.K. Khandelwal of Vardaan Hospital, New Delhi: ”Heart surgery can be performed even on a new born child. So even if the child is weighing less than 10 kg, the surgery can be performed”.
There is no one cure or treatment for children with Down Syndrome but there are many strategies to help the child cope better with the stress.

Skin Care post Holi

Holi
Holi is a day when nobody wants to be left out of the revelry. At the same time it is also a day of trauma for our skin and hair.
Months of skin and hair care can go for a toss just in a day when you play Holi full throttle.
While precautions are necessary to ensure harmful chemicals do not find way on to your skin with colors, it is also important to follow certain do’s and dont’s to avoid damage to the skin. Keeping the skin moisturized is an important part of the care regimen both pre and post Holi.
Once you are done with the Holi play and are counting the losses to your skin, you need to get some deep care treatments for both the skin and hair done to calm and soothe.
1. Cleanse and Moisturize, watch out for irritation
The first thing to do after the Holi play is a no brainer. Get in the clean up act immediately but make sure it is done softly and is not harsh to the skin. Cleaning the color with the make  up remover or a moisturizer based cleanser is a good idea as they act as emulsifiers. Do not use harsh loofas to bathe yourself.
2. Do it softly
Yet the excessive use of soap and shampoos is certain to leave your skin dry and irritated for several days. The most basic care regime is the use of moisturizer regularly. Apply a thick moisturizer several times a day, even an oil massage will be good for a few days. Oil your hair regularly for a few days after Holi, make sure you massage the scalp gently and apply oil to the hair shafts and tips liberally to undo the damage and loss of hydration.
In case a skin irritation persists, it may be a case of skin allergy. In such a situation, do not ignore it, refrain from doing a self treatment and visit a dermatologist on first priority. You may be needing medication.
3. Do not go for any cosmetic procedures till 3 to 5 days after Holi
If the colour is still on the skin then you should wait for 3 to 5 days before you can do procedures like photo facial, derma-brasion and chemical peels.
But, go for deep hydrating treatments after a few days
Chiranjiv Chhabra
4. Get a deep hydrating treatment a week beforeIt is not advisable to go for any cosmetic procedures a few days before and after Holi. However, it would serve you well if you get a deep hydrating treatment a week before the day. In case you haven’t done, so you may be needing some deep hydrating treatments after Holi as that is the time when your skin is depleted and dehydrated.
5. Treat your skin with oil massagesTreat your skin with oil massages at home for seven to eight days after Holi, then visit a dermatologist to get some skin replenishing and deep hydrating treatments. To increase the hydration levels of the skin we can use special Juvederm fillers to hydrate the skin of the face, hands and chest. This not only give a smooth, healthy and hydrated look but also makes the skin look younger and glowing and it will last for a long time.

6. No waxing or shaving for a week
When the skin is sensitive and irritated it does not want to be poked any more. As said earlier, after Holi the skin just needs to be moisturized and left alone to overcome the trauma. Harsh treatments like waxing and shaving can lead to problems on an already sensitive skin. Even threading should be strictly avoided for a few days before and after Holi as it leaves the skin slightly injured and vulnerable.

7. A hair therapy will be needed
Hair is another part of the body that takes the brunt of the Holi revelry. Color often sticks to the scalp and causes irritation of the sensitive scalp skin. The chemicals can also cause harm to the tips of the hair and leave them damaged and brittle. Besides the post Holi washing and heavy duty shampooing can again leave the hair dehydrated and dry. For a week after Holi, oil and massage your scalp daily to help the damaged hair recover from the trauma. 3 to 5 days after Holi, go for a hair spa and replenishing head massage.
